Posted on

Last month, Zannier Hotels Phum Baitang proudly received the prestigious Green Globe Certification once again, with a score of 91%. The certification recognizes the resort’s efforts towards sustainability, notably in managing and reducing waste, cultivating an organic garden, and implementing initiatives to empower the local community. By meeting the rigorous standards set by Green Globe, Zannier Hotels Phum Baitang not only enhances its reputation as luxury eco-resort but also sets a benchmark for sustainability in Cambodia and in the global hospitality industry.

Leading the way in Waste Management Innovations

By the end of 2023, Zannier Hotels Phum Baitang achieved significant progress in reducing its reliance on single-use plastics throughout the resort. Notably, guest rooms are now entirely free of plastic. Although a small number still enter the resort through external sources such as guests or suppliers, Zannier Hotels ensure responsible disposal. The successes are clear evidence of the hotel’s efforts: 100% recycling rate for glass and aluminum cans, amounting to an impressive 603 kg. These recycled materials are creatively repurposed, serving as both as construction materials and contributing to the creation of new cans. Embracing sustainability at every turn, we have adopted an innovative method for repurposing paper waste within our offices. Over 1,150 kilograms of paper have been repurposed as notepads before undergoing transformation into fresh paper at local facilities.

Moreover, Zannier Hotels Phum Baitang’s composting program has diverted a notable 13,688 kg of food waste. This compost sustains both the employees’ animals and our lush organic garden, embodying a circular approach to waste management. Additionally, strengthening eco-initiatives have been implemented: the resort has applied a proactive measure to convert all cooking oil waste into in-house biofuel in collaboration with local energy providers, totaling 110 kg last year.

More than an Organic Garden

Within its 8-hectare premises, Phum Baitang possesses a wonderful 400 sqm vegetable garden. Here, a rich variety of vegetables and herbs, from eggplants to sweet basil, mint, lemongrass and many more are nurtured to perfection. The resort also grows its own rice, which is served directly in the two restaurants and staff canteen, as well as presented to guests as a unique, local organic gift. With three to four crops annually, guests are welcomed to engage in both rice planting and harvesting, immersing themselves fully in our cherished sustainable ethos. Overall, the organic garden and paddies yield are an impressive total of 8 tons of vegetables and rice annually, embodying Zannier Hotels’ commitment to sustainability and community engagement. They constitute also a wonderful playground for the young audience, who can discover the basics of sustainability through guided tours and children’s activities.

In 2023, Zannier Hotels expanded its vegetarian and vegan options by 20%, ensuring a culinary experience for all guests. Additionally, the resort upheld its dedication to supporting local producers, with 70% of the food sourced locally and 100% from local suppliers. The efforts of Zannier Hotels Phum Baitang’s organic garden were particularly fruitful, with a total of 7,652 kg of organic vegetables and rice produced. Moreover, through three harvests last year, including the donation of one ton of rice to an orphanage, Zannier Hotels Phum Baitang continued to extend its positive impact beyond the resort, fostering a sense of community and generosity.

Empowering Education

Located in Kok Thnot, near Siem Reap, Zannier Hotels Phum Baitang actively addresses educational challenges by undertaking projects to repair school buildings and consistently supplying essential resources such as study materials to benefit over 504 students in the area. The success of these initiatives, including the establishment of two orphanages to support underprivileged children in building a promising future, is made possible through the generous contributions of our guests and Zannier Foundation.

In 2023, guest donations totalled to $5,462, which has been utilized to provide schooling materials and develop a new football and volleyball pitch with related accessories, as well as install solar lamps for the courtyard. Zannier Hotels in-house engineering team played a crucial role in constructing the pitch, thereby optimizing the impact of donations. Guests have been regularly updated via email and have warmly thanked for their contributions.
